Now, with a decade of experience under her belt and the right set of tools, the marketing and automation expert is living the entrepreneurial life she dreamed of when she left her government job and is coaching her clients to do the same.

And it's completely unnecessary,” Dawn wrote on her website. “I believe that automation is a crucial part of doing business today, but I don't believe it needs to be stressful or complicated.”
Dawn shared with us why she became an Ontraport Certified Expert and how she uses the platform to help entrepreneurs find time to do the things they love.
Modern Ontrapreneur Please tell us about your background before you became an Ontraport Certified Expert.
Dawn Marrs: My background is in public relations and marketing. I started what I thought was going to be my lifelong career as a communications officer for the federal government but always had that burning desire to be my own boss, set my own schedule and work from somewhere sunny.
I started my marketing consulting and training business in 2008 and, while entrepreneurship has it’s challenges, I’ve never looked back.
MO Why did you decide to become an Ontraport Certified Expert?
DM I became Ontraport Certified because I fell in love with the software. Until I found Ontraport, I’d been helping clients build systems by duct taping multiple software solutions together — autoresponders, landing page creators, membership sites, payment gateways, affiliate programs, etc. It was always a complex setup and only ever as strong as the weakest link … if one part failed it would ruin the entire system.
I was so impressed that Ontraport could handle everything in one place. It made life so much simpler for my own business that I knew I wanted to be best positioned to help my clients build profitable systems.

MO Please tell us a bit about your consulting business. What types of clients do you work with? What areas do you focus on?
DM I work mostly with service-based businesses — coaches, consultants, training companies, and local businesses — to implement sales funnels, follow-up campaigns, and to automate their time-consuming administrative tasks.
Something I noticed very early in my consulting career is that people want things done fast — basically turnkey systems that are ready to go. That’s why I decided to develop a library of done-for-you templates — from WordPress membership sites and courses to automated webinars, high ticket sales funnels, and flash sales. Everything is already professionally designed and copywritten so you can literally tweak it with your logo and go.
For example, we can install a complete WordPress LMS course platform in less than 24 hours, so our clients can start marketing immediately instead of three months down the line. Time is money after all.
MO Which aspects of Ontraport do you think are most useful or underrated?
DM The most useful to me is the visual Campaign Builder. Seriously, I’ve never been able to build out a sales funnel so fast and then be able to show it to a client who can then fully understand exactly what’s happening by essentially following a flowchart. It’s magic.
The most underrated is campaign reports (Performance Mode). I don’t think there is another CRM system that can give you the level of data that you can get from Ontraport campaigns. Knowing which emails are contributing to goals and how long people are on campaigns before they buy is really profitable information to have, and I don’t think most people are taking advantage of it.
MO You have your finger on the pulse of the small business owner and entrepreneur. What gaps are you seeing? What’s your advice for them?
DM I think a lot of small business owners still have the misconception that an all-in-one solution like Ontraport is too expensive, or that it will cost them more money than their current duct-taped setup. In reality, switching to Ontraport usually saves money — and the increase in productivity and time saving is so worth it.
MO How do your clients find you?
DM A lot of my business is referral-based, but I have a healthy number of people find me through SEO and Facebook ads as well.
MO The Ontraport way is "better business, better life." Do you feel like you're achieving that as well?
DM ABSOLUTELY. Before Ontraport, everything required my time. I felt like I needed to be available 24/7. Now, most aspects of my business are automated and, because everything is systemized, it’s easy to let a virtual assistant handle the rest. Now I get to focus on serving clients, developing new training programs, and enjoying the Southern California sunshine.
MO What’s next for you?
DM My focus this year is in creating affordable training and done-for-you programs to help small businesses owners eliminate the tech challenges and frustration associated with doing business online.
